On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected the sixteenth President of the United States, becoming the first candidate of the newly formed Republican Party to reach the White House. His election triggered the secession of the Southern states and the outbreak of the American Civil War, which would end with the abolition of slavery.

On November 15, 2001, Microsoft launched the Xbox console in the United States, entering the video game market for the first time and directly challenging Sony and Nintendo. The launch included the game Halo: Combat Evolved, which became an immediate hit and defined the first-person shooter genre on consoles.

On November 6, 1917, Lenin's Red Army and the Bolsheviks stormed the Winter Palace in Petrograd, the seat of the Russian Provisional Government, in the event known as the October Revolution (under the Julian calendar). The coup launched the world's first communist state and changed the course of twentieth-century history.
