On November 9, 1989, the East German government announced that citizens could freely cross the border into the West. Thousands of people gathered at the border crossings and began tearing down the Berlin Wall with hammers. The fall of the wall symbolised the end of the Cold War and paved the way for German reunification, completed less than a year later.

On November 9, 1934, astronomer Carl Sagan was born in Brookline, Massachusetts, who would become the greatest science communicator of the twentieth century. His television series Cosmos (1980) was watched by 500 million people worldwide. Sagan also pioneered the search for extraterrestrial intelligence and authored the novel Contact, adapted for film in 1997.

On November 9, 1918, Kaiser Wilhelm II abdicated and fled to the Netherlands, ending the German Empire and the House of Hohenzollern. That same day, Social Democrat Philipp Scheidemann proclaimed the Weimar Republic from a window of the Reichstag. Two days later, the armistice of November 11 ended the First World War.
