On November 8, 1895, German physicist Wilhelm Röntgen discovered X-rays while experimenting with vacuum tubes in his Würzburg laboratory. Röntgen observed that unknown rays penetrated matter and could photograph the interior of the human body. The first X-ray in history was of his wife's hand. He won the first Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901.
On November 8, 1923, Adolf Hitler and the SA attempted to seize power in Munich with the so-called Beer Hall Putsch, a coup inspired by Mussolini's March on Rome the previous year. The attempt failed; Hitler was arrested and sentenced to five years in prison, of which he served only nine months — time he used to dictate Mein Kampf.
On November 8, 2016, billionaire Donald Trump defeated Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton in the US presidential election, in one of the most surprising results in recent electoral history. Trump, with no prior political experience, won 306 electoral votes against Clinton's 232, although he lost the popular vote by nearly three million votes.
