On November 1, 1952, the United States detonated the first hydrogen bomb in history at Elugelab atoll in the Marshall Islands. The device, codenamed Ivy Mike, was 700 times more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb and completely vaporised the island. The USSR responded by detonating its own hydrogen bomb nine months later.

On November 1, 1954, the Algerian National Liberation Front launched a coordinated series of attacks against French targets, beginning the Algerian War of Independence. The conflict, one of the bloodiest of decolonisation, lasted eight years and cost the lives of more than 300,000 Algerians. Algeria gained independence on July 5, 1962.

On November 1, 1755, a devastating earthquake followed by a tsunami and great fires destroyed the city of Lisbon during the All Saints' Day festivities. Between 10,000 and 100,000 people died. The disaster shocked Enlightenment Europe and was debated by philosophers such as Voltaire and Rousseau, who questioned the idea of a benevolent divine providence.
