On October 25, 1971, the UN General Assembly voted to recognise the People's Republic of China as the sole legitimate representative of China, expelling Taiwan from its seat as a permanent member of the Security Council. The decision, backed by 76 countries, was a turning point in the international recognition of communist China.
On October 25, 1415, the English army of King Henry V defeated a far superior French force at the Battle of Agincourt in northern France. French losses were catastrophic — between 6,000 and 10,000 dead — against minimal English casualties. Shakespeare immortalised the battle in his play Henry V with the famous "happy few" speech.
On October 25, 1983, the United States launched Operation Urgent Fury, invading the small Caribbean island of Grenada following a Marxist coup. It was the first US offensive military operation since Vietnam and generated international criticism, including from the UK and the UN. Grenada returned to democracy shortly afterwards.
