What happened on November 7?
On November 7, 1867, Marie Curie was born in Warsaw, the scientist who would become the first woman to win a Nobel Prize and the only person to win it in two different scientific disciplines: Physics (1903) and Chemistry (1911). Her research on radioactivity opened a new era in science and medicine, though radiation itself ended her life in 1934.
On November 7, 1917 (October 25 under the Julian calendar), Lenin's Bolsheviks seized power in Russia in what is known as the October Revolution. The cruiser Aurora fired a blank cannon shot as the signal for the assault on the Winter Palace. Thus began the first socialist state in history, the Soviet Union.
On November 7, 1940, the Tacoma Narrows suspension bridge in the state of Washington collapsed spectacularly just four months after its inauguration, shaken by moderate winds of only 64 km/h. The collapse, captured on film, became the classic example of resonance in engineering and radically transformed the design of suspension bridges worldwide.
