What happened on December 15?
On December 15, 1791, the first ten amended articles of the US Constitution — known as the Bill of Rights — were officially ratified. These articles guarantee fundamental freedoms such as speech, press, religion, the right to bear arms and the right to a fair trial. They are the foundations of the American legal system.
On December 16, 1944, German forces launched the Battle of the Bulge, the last major offensive of the German Army on the Western Front. Hitler gambled on breaking through Allied lines to reach the port of Antwerp. The attack caught the Allies by surprise, but the resistance at Bastogne and the arrival of clear weather allowing air support foiled the plan.
On December 15, 1960, the Court of Justice of the European Communities delivered its first judgment, establishing itself as the judicial institution of what is today the European Union. The court ensures the uniform application of EU law in all member states and its rulings take precedence over the national laws of EU countries.
