What happened on December 13?
On December 13, 1942, King George VI awarded the George Cross to the island of Malta — the only case in history in which this decoration was awarded to an entire people for their collective heroism. Malta withstood more than two years of German and Italian siege and bombing without surrendering, being a key strategic point in the Mediterranean during World War II.
On December 13, 1937, Japanese forces entered Nanking, capital of the Republic of China, and began an orgy of violence that history knows as the Nanking Massacre. Over six weeks, the Japanese army killed between 100,000 and 300,000 civilians and prisoners of war and committed tens of thousands of rapes. It is one of the most serious war crimes of the twentieth century.
On December 13, 1989, Taylor Swift was born in West Reading, Pennsylvania. Considered one of the greatest music stars of the twenty-first century, she has won twelve Grammy Awards and broken records for album sales and concert attendance.
