🇵🇦1989

On December 20, 1989, the United States launched Operation Just Cause, invading Panama to overthrow dictator Manuel Noriega, accused of drug trafficking and threatening the security of the Panama Canal. Between 500 and 4,000 people were killed. Noriega was captured, tried in the US and sentenced to 40 years in prison for drug trafficking.

🇫🇷1803

On December 20, 1803, the United States completed the Louisiana Purchase, acquiring from France a territory of more than 2 million square kilometres for 15 million dollars — less than three cents per hectare. The transaction, driven by Napoleon, who needed funds for his wars, doubled American territory and opened the expansion westward.

🚀1968

On December 21, 1968, Apollo 8 lifted off from Cape Canaveral, becoming the first crewed mission to leave Earth orbit and reach the Moon. Astronauts Borman, Lovell and Anders orbited the Moon ten times on Christmas Eve and broadcast the reading of Genesis to Earth with the planet floating in the background. It was the first human lunar flight in history.
