On December 12, 1901, Italian physicist Guglielmo Marconi received at Signal Hill, Newfoundland, the first radio signal transmitted across the Atlantic Ocean from the Poldhu station in Cornwall. The signal was the letter "S" in Morse code. The achievement demonstrated that radio waves could follow the curvature of the Earth and revolutionised global communications.
On December 12, 1963, Kenya declared independence from the United Kingdom, with Jomo Kenyatta as Prime Minister. Kenyatta, who had been imprisoned for nine years by the British accused of leading the Mau Mau movement, became the country's first president the following year. December 12 is Independence Day — or Jamhuri Day — in Kenya.
On December 12, 2000, the US Supreme Court ruled in Bush v. Gore that the recount of votes in Florida had to stop, effectively resolving the disputed presidential election in favour of George W. Bush. The decision, adopted by 5 votes to 4, remains one of the most controversial in the history of the American Supreme Court.
