What happened on June 10?
June 10 is Portugal's national holiday — Portugal Day, Camões Day and Portuguese Communities Day — in honour of poet Luís de Camões, who died on that day in 1580. Camões, author of the epic poem "Os Lusíadas" (1572) — the greatest epic poem in the Portuguese language — lived and died in poverty despite his genius. His work narrates the maritime exploits of Vasco da Gama and is the symbol of Lusitanian cultural identity.
On June 10, 1967, the Six-Day War ended with a ceasefire between Israel and Syria. In less than a week, Israel had conquered the Sinai, Gaza, the West Bank — including East Jerusalem — and the Golan Heights. The Israeli military triumph quadrupled the territory under its control and created the territorial situation that conditions Middle Eastern politics today, with hundreds of thousands of Palestinians under occupation.
On June 10, 1994, the FIFA World Cup began in the United States — the first held in North America. The tournament, with 24 national teams, attracted more than 3.5 million spectators — the highest number in World Cup history. Brazil won the tournament for the fourth time, defeating Italy in the Pasadena final in the first penalty shootout to decide a World Cup final.

Nicolaus August Otto was a German engineer who successfully developed the compressed charge internal combustion engine which ran on petroleum gas and led to the modern internal combustion engine.
Kevin O'Flanagan
Kevin Patrick O'Flanagan was an Irish sportsman, physician and sports administrator. An outstanding all-rounder, he represented his country at both soccer and rugby union. He was also a noted sprinter and long jumper and as a youth played Gaelic football. In his spare time he also played golf and tennis at a decent level.
László Kubala
László Kubala was a professional footballer. He played as a forward for Ferencváros, Slovan Bratislava, Barcelona, and Espanyol, among other clubs. Regarded as one of the greatest players in history, Kubala is considered a hero of Barcelona. He was born in Hungary but also had Czechoslovak and Spanish citizenship, and played for the national teams of all three countries.
Theo Sommer
Theo Sommer was a German newspaper editor and intellectual. He began working for Die Zeit in 1958, rising to an editor-in-chief and publisher. His editorials for Die Zeit shaped the paper's social-liberal attitude. He advocated the policy of détente with the Eastern bloc states (Entspannungspolitik). From 1992, Sommer was publisher of Die Zeit, together with Marion Dönhoff and Helmut Schmidt.
Vasanti N. Bhat-Nayak
Vasanti N. Bhat-Nayak was a mathematician whose research concerned balanced incomplete block designs, bivariegated graphs, graceful graphs, graph equations and frequency partitions. She earned a Ph.D. from the University of Mumbai in 1970 with the dissertation Some New Results in PBIBD Designs and Combinatorics. S. S. Shrikhande was her advisor.
