👑1953

On June 2, 1953, Princess Elizabeth was crowned Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom at Westminster Abbey — the first coronation ceremony in history broadcast on television. About 27 million Britons watched it on television and 11 million listened on radio. The young 27-year-old queen could not know her reign would last more than 70 years — the longest in British history.

🇮🇹1946

On June 2, 1946, Italians voted in a referendum to abolish the monarchy and establish the Italian Republic. The republic won with 54% of the vote. King Umberto II, who had reigned for just 34 days, went into exile. June 2 is today Italian Republic Day. The referendum was the first in Italian history in which women could vote.

🔬1875

On June 2, 1875, American inventor Alexander Graham Bell unveiled in Boston the harmonic telegraph — his invention for multiple simultaneous telegraph transmission. Working to improve it, he arrived at the idea of the telephone, which he patented on March 7, 1876. Bell, together with his father-in-law and patron Gardiner Greene Hubbard, founded the Bell Telephone Company in 1877 — the seed of future AT&T.
