March 30 has no owner yet

On March 30, 1853, painter Vincent van Gogh was born in Zundert, Netherlands — one of the most influential artists in Western art history. His work — "Sunflowers", "The Starry Night", "The Bedroom in Arles" — characterised by expressive use of colour, was misunderstood during his lifetime. Van Gogh shot himself on July 27, 1890 and died two days later at 37, having sold only one painting.

On March 30, 1867, the US purchased Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million — less than 2 cents per acre — in what critics called "Seward's Folly", referring to Secretary of State William Seward, who negotiated the deal. Alaska, at 1.7 million km², is the largest US state and proved to be an extraordinary acquisition for its natural resources.

On March 30, 1981, US President Ronald Reagan was shot in an assassination attempt by John Hinckley Jr. outside the Washington Hilton Hotel in Washington D.C. A bullet lodged less than a centimetre from his heart. Press secretary James Brady, a Secret Service agent and a police officer were also wounded. Reagan recovered and completed both his presidential terms.
