What happened on March 16?
On March 16, 1521, Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan reached the islands now known as the Philippines during the first circumnavigation of the globe. Magellan was killed on April 27 at the Battle of Mactan by the forces of King Lapulapu. The expedition, which completed the voyage under Juan Sebastián Elcano, definitively proved that the Earth was spherical.
On March 16, 1968, American soldiers killed between 347 and 504 Vietnamese civilians — women, children and elderly — in the village of My Lai, in the most infamous episode of the Vietnam War. The My Lai Massacre, concealed for months, was revealed by journalist Seymour Hersh in November 1969 and shocked American public opinion, accelerating the anti-war movement.
On March 16, 1802, President Thomas Jefferson signed the law creating the US Military Academy at West Point in New York — the oldest military educational institution in the US and one of the most prestigious in the world. Among its graduates are presidents such as Ulysses Grant and Dwight Eisenhower, and military leaders from both sides of the Civil War.
