🇻🇪1811

On July 5, 1811, the Congress of Venezuela approved the Declaration of Independence, making it the first nation in South America to break free from Spain. The document was signed by 37 deputies, including Francisco de Miranda. The struggle to consolidate that independence, led by Simón Bolívar, would last more than a decade longer.

🐑1996

On July 5, 1996, scientists at the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh created Dolly, the first sheep cloned from an adult cell using the technique of somatic cell nuclear transfer. The birth, publicly announced in February 1997, revolutionised biology and sparked a global ethical debate about the possibility and desirability of cloning living beings, including humans.

🇩🇿1962

On July 5, 1962, Algeria proclaimed independence from France after eight years of bloody war that cost the lives of more than 300,000 people. Independence came following the Évian Accords signed on March 19, in which France recognised the Algerian right to self-determination. July 5 is the national holiday of Algeria.
